Taylor Caffery

USBA President-1968-70

Kenneth R. Davidson Award-1965

IBF Meritorious Award-1989

USA Badminton Meritorious Award-1995

Taylor had a wonderful family and was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his wife Ellie, sons Taylor and Donelson, daughters Martha and Barbara, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

He was a New Orleans native. Graduated from Tulane University in School of Law, he was highly regarded as an Oil and Gas Attorney specializing in estate work.  From 1942-1946 he served as Lt. Commander in the Navy in the Pacific Theater.

Taylor's true love was badminton and the games' competition which lasted throughout his lifetime.  He served as President of USA Badminton from 1968-1970, was a Lifetime Honorary Vice President, received the Ken Davidson Award in 1965, traveled with the Uber and Thomas Cup teams to Denmark, Japan, England and Peru as an ambassador and flag waver.  In 1989, he received the IBF Meritorious Service Award for his years of service to the IBF on behalf of USA Badminton.  In 1995 he received the seniors' Meritorious Service Award. In 1985, he won the Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles National Grandmaster titles.

Perhaps his greatest contribution to USA Badminton was the establishment of the United States Education Foundation (along with Charlie Newhall). He was a primary contributor to the Foundation and kept the program solvent.  Today, because of him and others, this organization continues to support badminton educational programs, development, and athletic achievements.

After his death in 1995, at the age of 80, his estate gifted a huge sum of money for developing and creating training manuals for coaches.

Taylor was a truly compassionate, sensitive, quick-witted friend of badminton. His contributions to USA Badminton and the Foundation will long endure and benefit generations to come.
