Krajewski and Simon into Semifinals at Brazil Parabadminton International 2023

Play continued on Friday for two Team USA athletes at the 2023 Brazil Parabadminton International. Jayci Simon (SH6) and Miles Krajewski (SH6) were both still alive in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
The pair opened the day with a mixed doubles match against the world ranked #1 pair from Peru. In a back-and-forth game one, Simon and Krajewski prevailed 21-19 and had the momentum going into game two. The second game progressed much like the first with both pairs exchanging 2- and 3-point runs until Peru pulled ahead 19-17. Simon and Krajewski, though, did not yield and closed the match with a 4-point run to complete the upset, 21-19, and earn a spot in Saturday’s semifinal against the pair from India.
Next up was the quarterfinals in women’s singles. Simon took the floor first, going up against top seed Giuliana Poveda Flores in a rematch of their group match. Hoping for a better result than the 3-game loss earlier in the tournament, Simon started off strong and her game plan kept her close. It was not enough, however, to overcome the seasoned Flores as Simon felt 15-21, 7-21.
Just as Simon was finishing her match, Krajewski was beginning his quarterfinal match with the 3/4 seed, Krysten Coombs (England). Within the first few points of the match, it became evident it was going to be a back-and-forth battle between two closely matched opponents. The score remained tight throughout both games, with several lead changes and neither opponent ever leading by more than 3 or 4 points. In the end, Coombs came out on top, 21-19, 21-18. The loss ended a challenging singles draw that saw Krajewski compete closely with the #4, #5, and #6 ranked players in the world.
Simon and partner, Yasmina Eissa (Egypt) closed out the day of matches for Team USA with a win in their final women’s doubles group match. The win secured a spot in the semifinals on Saturday, where they will meet a pair from Hong Kong.
Krajewski and his partner, Vitor Tavares (Brazil), had the day off in men’s doubles after earning a bye into the semifinals, where they will play the pair from France on Saturday.
