Americans Wrap-up Competition at Pan American Championships

Twenty-two athletes represented Team USA at the XXVI YONEX Pan American Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, April 26-29, 2023. It was a tough competition for the Americans as Canada swept all five events of the competition. However, three U.S. players and pairs advanced to the final rounds.

Top Results:

  • In women’s singles, Beiwen Zhang advanced to the final where she faced Michelle Li of Canada. Zhang kept it close in the first game, but lost in the second (21-19, 21-9). The depth of the U.S. squad was evident as Lauren Lam and Iris Wang finished in the bronze positions. Lam bested Juliana Viana Vieira of Brazil (21-12, 21-7) in her quarterfinal match, while Wang bested Talia Ng of Canada (21-14, 16-21, 21-6) in her quarterfinal match.
  • In women’s doubles Francesca Corbett and Allison Lee faced the Canadian duo of Catherine Choi and Josephine Wu. They dropped the match (21-14, 21-18). The other American team of Annie Xu and Kerry XU ended the competition in the bronze\ position with a victory over the Brazilian team of Sania Lima and Juliana Viana Vieira (20-22, 21-13, 21-6).
  • In men’s doubles, the U.S. teams of Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith and Vinson Chiu and Joshua Yuan both finished in the bronze position. The team of Zhi Yi and Smith ended the tournament with a win over Job Castillo and Luis Armando Montoya Navarro of Mexico (18-21, 21-7, 21-17). The team of Chiu and Yuan also ended the tournament with a win over Anibal Marroquin and Jonathan Solis of Guatemala.
