Badminton Play Begins at Santiago 2023 Pan American Games

Badminton competition officially began on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Four U.S. athletes kicked off their Games in singles. 

The day began with men’s singles athlete Howard Shu facing Argentina’s Santiago Adrian Otero. Shu defeated the Argentinian athlete, 21-10 and 21-12.

Also in men’s singles, Justin Ma faced Guatemala’s Kevin Cordón next, falling 13-21 and 12-21 against the two-time Pan Am Games gold medalist. 

In women’s singles, Beiwen Zhang defeated Venezuela’s Maria Rojas Camacho, 21-6 and 21-3.

To cap off U.S. play on the first day, Jennie Gai defeated Adriana Barrios Chiong from Guatemala, 21-9 and 21-11. 

Upcoming Matches

On Sunday, October 22, Howard Shu will face Ecuador’s Henry Alejandro Huebla Leon at 5:30AM Pacific time. 

At 6:30AM Pacific time, Beiwen Zhang will face Brazil’s Samia Raquel Passos Lima.

At 7:30AM Pacific time, Jennie Gai will face Jamaica’s Tahlia Richardson.

At 8:30AM Pacific time, Joshua Yuan and Vinson Yuan will face El Salvador’s Manual Alfonso Mejia Ramirez and Javier Armando Alas Alas. 

At 1:30PM Pacific time, Annie Xu and Kerry Xu will face Argentina’s Ailen Romina Oliva and Iona Angelina Gualdi.

At 2:30PM Pacific time, Jennie Gai and Vinson Chiu will face Peru’s Diego Alonso Mini Cuadros and Paula Lucia La Torre Regal.
