BEIWEN ZHANG COMES UP JUST SHORT IN THRILLING DENMARK OPEN QUARTERFINAL

Beiwen Zhang’s run in the Danisa Denmark Open 2020 ended on Friday in a grueling, three-game loss to reigning Olympic Gold Medalist, Carolina Marin, in the quarterfinals.

Zhang won the opening game, 21-17, by controlling the pace of play and aggressive shots that caught Marin wrongfooted.

The second game was back-and-forth early as both Zhang and Marin battled for control. With the score tied 10-10, Zhang took the momentum and scored four of the next five points to take a 14-11 lead. But Marin rallied back and scored six straight points to take control and eventually win the second game, 21-17.

In the decisive third game, with both players exhausted from long rallies in the first two games, Zhang jumped out to an early 3-0. Marin quickly evened the score at 4-4 and from that point on, the Olympic Champion controlled the pace of play and ultimately won the third game, 21-14, and the match.
