Coach Application for International Badminton U16 Shonai 2025

USA Badminton is now accepting applications (due Friday, April 4, 2025, 11:59 AM (one minute before NOON, Pacific Time)) for the Coach position for the International Badminton U16 Shonai 2025 (June 28-29, 2025 in Shonai, Japan).
USA is allotted one (1) U16 Boys’ Singles player and one (1) U16 Girls’ Singles player. A selection event for this tournament was held in conjunction with the 2025 YONEX SOUTH ORC. Selected athletes can be found here.

April 4, 2025 Application Deadline Update
Coach Application deadline for International Badminton U16 Shonai 2025 has been extended to Thursday, April 10, 2025, 5:59 PM Pacific Time. Please see below for application information.
Applicants must check the submitted contact email regularly to ensure timely communication with USAB on tournament requirements.
Who Can Apply
This application is open to all USAB coaches who have completed the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Coach Education Level 1 (online component).
Applicants must be a current USAB member in good standing, must be compliant with SafeSport education, and have an active (current green light) NCSI background check on file by the start of the tournament. They must also possess a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after the conclusion of the tournament.
Per the organizer’s request, USAB is selecting one (1) coach for this tournament. The selected coach will need to apply for the 2025-2026 USAB Coaching Pass once the application is opened.
USAB prefers that Coach(es):
- Be the personal coach as designated by at least one athlete/doubles pair who is selected to the respective tournament.
- Be BWF Level 1 (in person) certified.
Expectations
The selected coach is responsible for providing game strategies and techniques to allow the athletes to reach their highest level of competition. The selected coach motivates the athletes and helps athletes develop sportsmanship, game appreciation, and self-esteem.
Take on roles as coach and Team Manager (if needed). E.g. coordinate with local organizers, book practice courts, manage media relations, and such.
Logistics
The tournament organizers will provide a stipend for airfare and cover four (4) nights of hotel (check in on June 26; check out on June 30). The coach will cover the difference in the airfare and all other fees. USAB will not be funding this position.

The USAB High Performance Committee (HPC, formerly known as High Performance Advisory Group, HPAG) will review the identified pool of candidates for the Coach position and evaluate individuals based on the requirements above, as well as the criteria below. The HPC will rank up to five (5) candidates for the Coach position. The Coach will be selected based on the following factors, which are listed in no particular order:
- Be a current personal coach of an athlete nominated to the International Badminton Shonai 2025 but able to manage conflicts of interest this may create
- Experience working with elite athletes
- Experience coaching at BWF international individual or team competitions.
- Standing of competing athlete(s) of personal coaches based on ranking and past results, including the 2024 U.S. National or Junior National Championships
- Ability to work with multiple athletes
- History of traveling internationally with athlete(s)
- Proven ability to work in collaboration with USAB and other team staff
