Proposal: Early Implementation of the BWF 3×15 Scoring System for 2026–2027 USA Badminton Junior Events

In April 2026, The Badminton World Federation (BWF) officially approved the adoption of the 3×15 rally scoring system, with the new Laws of Badminton taking effect on January 4, 2027.

To support a smooth and consistent transition to the new Laws of Badminton, it is proposed that all USA Badminton Junior sanctioned events beginning with the 2026–2027 junior season be conducted using the new 3×15 rally scoring format, rather than transitioning midway through the season when the BWF rule change takes effect.

Implementing the new scoring system at the start of the junior season will:

• Provide a consistent scoring format throughout the entire junior competition season.
• Give athletes a full season of competition under the new format before it is used in international competition.
• Allow coaches, technical officials, and tournament organizers sufficient time to become familiar with the new scoring system and related procedures.
• Eliminate the need for athletes and officials to transition to a new scoring format immediately before the 2027 Junior Selection Event and the 2027 Junior National Championships, both of which will be conducted under the new BWF scoring system.

Here are the main changes that come with the new 3×15 system: 

• Instead of 21 points, games will be played to 15 points. There will still be 3 games, and the best of 3 games wins.
• There will be a 60 second interval at the 8 point marks.
• In the 3rd game, players change ends at 8 points.
• In the event of a 14-14 point tie, the player must win by 2 points.
• At 20-20 points, the player who scores the next point wins.

The intent of this proposal is to ensure that the entire 2026–2027 junior season is conducted under a single scoring format. Adopting the new system at the beginning of the season provides a consistent competitive environment for all participants, avoids a mid-season rules change, and gives athletes, coaches, technical officials, and tournament organizers a full season to prepare for competition under the new BWF Laws of Badminton.
