USA BADMINTON ATHLETES’ ADVISORY COUNCIL ELECTION

Athlete Advisory Council

Consists of seven athlete representatives who protect the rights of athletes and aim to help all athletes reach their greatest potential in the sport of badminton through athlete advocacy, community engagement, education, and empowerment.

Athlete Representative Roles and Responsibilities

  • Familiarize yourself with USAB’s bylaws, AAC bylaws, the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sport Act, and various other policies affecting athletes’ rights.
  • Understand the athlete pool you represent and work to engage the athletes represented.
  • Actively attend AAC meetings (and Board of Directors meetings if applicable).
  • Proactively reach out to your constituents enabling athletes to comment on policies/procedures freely.
  • Consistently communicate with your NGB CEO/ED and other key stakeholders on matters impacting athletes.
  • Synthesize athletes’ feedback on policies and procedures and provide input to the relevant party.
  • Provide an avenue for athletes to voice their concerns.
  • Review, gather, and provide athlete input on selection procedures for the selection of Olympic, Paralympic, Pan Am Games, and international team events.

*Note:
Richard Alcarez (USOPC Alternate Representative) and Rena Wang (USOPC AAC Representative) have been elected to the Athletes Advisory Council for the 2021-2024 term.

Amy Burnett’s current AAC term ends on December 31, 2022.

Election Purpose

To elect four individuals to the Athletes Advisory Council for the 2021-2024 term.

Eligibility to Vote:

  1. Must be at 18 years of age or older.
  2. Be a current USAB Member in good standing.
  3. Be a citizen of the United States.
  4. Meet one of the following athlete competition criteria:
  • Represented the United States as athletes in the Olympic or Paralympic Games, the Pan American Games, Para Pan American Games, Continental Qualifying Championships, World or Para World  Championships, World Team Championships.

Or

  • Competed in any of USAB’s Junior Nationals, Collegiate Nationals, SeniorNationals, Adult Team Trials, National Championships as athletes within the two (2) year period prior to December 31 of the year in which the election is held shall be eligible to run for election to the Athletes’ Advisory Council.

Eligibility to Run:

  1. Must be at 18 years of age or older.
  2. Be a current USAB Member in good standing.
  3. Be a citizen of the United States.
  4. Meet one of the following athlete competition criteria:
  • Represented the United States as athletes in the Olympic or Paralympic Games, the Pan American Games, Para Pan American Games, Continental Qualifying Championships, World or Para World  Championships, World Team Championships.

Or

  • Competed in any of USAB’s Junior Nationals, Collegiate Nationals, SeniorNationals, Adult Team Trials, National Championships as athletes within the two (2) year period prior to December 31 of the year in which the election is held shall be eligible to run for election to the Athletes’ Advisory Council.

By November 10, 2020 11:59 PM PST, prospective candidates must:

  1. Have a cleared and current background check; this can be done through the USAB Simply Compete membership portal site – https://usab.simplycompete.com/login/auth.
    *Generally, the cost for a background check is $30 for two years *
  2. Be Safe Sport Compliant- this is free and is also completed through the USAB Simply Compete membership portal site – https://usab.simplycompete.com/login/auth.
  3. Disclose any felony convictions or any other period of ineligibility served in sport, such as violations of anti-doping codes or SafeSport violations. *USAB may require applicants to complete a USAB Ethics and Conflicts of Interest Form*
  4. Submit the following to usab@usabadminton.org:
  • A 200-word nomination statement.
  • A brief cover letter summarizing qualifications, motivation, and willingness to serve.
  • Current resume/CV with professional, athletic, and governance qualifications.

Election Timeline:

October 21, 2020 – Request for nominations and instructions posted online
November 10, 2020, 11:59 pm PST – Nominations Close
November 13, 2020 – Ballots sent out
November 29, 2020, 11:59 pm PST – Voting Closes
December 1, 2020 – Election Results Announced
