USA Badminton Wraps Up Successful 2023 Yonex U.S. Open Badminton Championships

USA Badminton hosted the much anticipated return of the 2023 Yonex U.S. Open Badminton Championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa on July 11-16.

The tournament saw top-level athletes from around the world captivate fans at the Mid-America Center. Top U.S. athletes included the up-and-coming mixed doubles team of Presley Smith and Allison Lee who finished in the bronze position. They were the first U.S.mixed doubles pair to advance to the semifinals of the U.S. Open since 2012.

Tournament winners included: Li Shi Feng of China in men’s singles, Supanida Katethong of Thailand in women’s singles, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin of Malaysia in men’s doubles, Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China in women’s doubles and Ye Hong Wei and Lee Chia Hsin of Chinese Taipei in mixed doubles.

Other U.S. results of note:

  • Iris Wang was eliminated in the Round of 16 in women’s singles by Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam (26-24, 17-21, 21-8).
  • In women’s doubles, sisters Annie and Kerry Xu advanced to the quarter finals where they fell to Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen of Denmark (21-14, 21-18).
  • In mixed doubles, Vinson Chiu and Jennie Gai advanced to the quarter finals where they fell to Mathias Thyrri and Amalie Magelund of Denmark (21-10, 20-22, 21-14).
  • Top-seeded U.S. athlete Beiwen Zhang withdrew from the tournament due to injury prior to competing.
  • In total there were 35 U.S. entries in individual and doubles competition.

The U.S. Open is a Super 300 level tournament on the Badminton World Federation Tour, a circuit of 27 tournaments held globally. Full results are available here.
