A Look Back at USA Player Results at International Tournaments in 2023

By Seika Murase & Elise Hadidi

The year of 2023 has been a thrilling journey for USA Badminton athletes marked by great challenges, new achievements, and awesome team spirit. U.S. athletes have won 25 gold medals, 24 silver medals, and 31 bronze medals in BWF tournaments over the past calendar year.

We cannot conclude 2023 without mentioning the remarkable achievements by women’s singles player Beiwen Zhang. Zhang won two titles at BWF World Tour events – a gold medal win at the SATHIO GROUP Australian Open after beating Kim Ga-eun from Korea, and another gold medal at the HYLO Open after beating Line Kjærsfeldt from Denmark. Beiwen was also the runner-up in the Orleans Masters and YONEX Taipei Open. She reached the semifinals at the YONEX Canada Open and Kumamoto Masters Japan, both of which are Super 500 events.

This year, USA Badminton also hosted three major BWF Tournaments: the HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 YONEX US Open 2023 held in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and the BWF World Junior Championships and BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships held in Spokane, Washington. At the US Open, mixed doubles pair Presley Smith and Allison Lee reached the semifinals. At the BWF World Junior Championships, women’s doubles pair Allison Lee and Francesca Corbett defeated the top-seeded Japanese pair Mei Sudo and Nao Yamakita and reached the finals, bringing home a silver medal. The historic moment marked the U.S.’s first podium finish at the BWF World Junior Championships. For the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championship, the USA Team finished in 10th place.

Looking towards 2024, we hope to see more exciting performances from USA Badminton athletes, especially from the juniors who continue to impress with their improvement and commitment. Lastly, we would like to thank all sponsors, partners, and supporters for their continued support and commitment to the sport of badminton in the US. We wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year!
